The roots of SportsMed-Wheaton Orthopaedics began in February of 1973, when two orthopaedic surgeons opened a general orthopaedic practice known as Wheaton Orthopaedics, Ltd. The practice was located in the Mona Kea Medical Park in Carol Stream, Illinois. Dr. Richard H. Dominguez was one of the founding partners of the group.
The clinic’s orthopaedic surgery staff grew with the addition of Dr. Paul Groen in 1976 and Dr. Stephen Baker in 1980. Dr. Richard Erickson joined in 1990.
Since then Dr. Groen retired from clinical medicine in 1992, and sadly in December 1995 Dr. Richard Dominguez lost his life in an automobile accident. His pioneering spirit, medical expertise and spiritual strength provide all of us with a great legacy. Dr. Stephen Baker retired after 37 years of practice in April of 2017.
In 1979 the growing orthopaedic practice and physical therapy department responded to the need for additional space by moving to 501 Thornhill Drive in Carol Stream. The name of SportsMed was added to reflect the physicians’ desire and commitment to specialize in sports medicine. They also developed a fitness center where members could approach exercise through medically safe, sound, and enjoyable programs.
In October of 1985, SportsMed-Wheaton Orthopaedics moved into it’s current location of 327 Gundersen Drive in Carol Stream and in 1986 built the SportsMed Center for Fitness.
In the spring of 2007, ATI took over the leadership of SportsMed’s physical therapy services and the Sportsmed’s Center for Fitness which has been renovated and now reopened as ATI Fitness Center.
